Layered brushwork in soft rose, pale ivory and muted chartreuse builds movement and depth, and fine drips run down through the darkness, adding a contemporary tension to an otherwise romantic subject. The flowers read as light held against shadow, grounded at the lower edge and luminous as they climb.

Both paintings are presented in carved ivory-toned wood frames with scrolling botanical relief, a refined counterpoint of traditional ornament to modern, gestural painting. Shared in palette, subject and framing, the two are made to hang together.

History & Provenance

The pair is attributed to Hela Donela, a self-taught, Finnish-born painter who has made her life and work in Australia, first around Jervis Bay on the New South Wales South Coast and more recently at Rocky Cape in north-west Tasmania. She paints mainly in acrylic, and flowers are among her most frequent subjects, often painted as feeling rather than as botanical studies. These works are consistent with that language.

Product Details

Field

Detail

Object

Pair of original floral abstract paintings

Origin

Australia (attributed)

Form

Two framed paintings on canvas, carved ivory-toned wood frames with botanical scrollwork; ready to hang; sold as a pair

Material

Paint on canvas

Marks

Attributed to Hela Donela

Era

Contemporary, 21st century

Condition

Painting surfaces clean and stable with no visible damage; frames present well with minimal wear consistent with display. The dark ground keeps them from reading too sweet, and the brushwork keeps them alive. Hang them side by side in a neutral or transitional room, flanking a bed or a mantel, in a sitting room, or as the anchor of a layered gallery wall, where the carved frames tie them to antiques and the painting brings a living energy.

To keep them at their best, hang them out of direct sun and away from heat sources and humidity.
