It's a quiet picture built with real discipline. The highlights are held back, the shadows are laid in gradually, and the fruit sits with weight instead of floating on the surface. Signed Sirvent at lower right, it's the work of Leandro Sirvent, a Spanish-born painter who made his career in Paris, and whose fruit still lifes were popular enough by 1892 to be published as colour prints, one of them titled Panier de pêches, a basket of peaches.

History & Provenance

Leandro Sirvent was born in Jijona, in the hills above Alicante, and trained at the school of fine arts in Madrid. By 1867 he was living at 8 rue Coustou in Montmartre and showing two paintings at the Paris Salon, one of them a scene of a child's funeral custom from his home town that a Paris critic called painfully moving. In the decades that followed he turned to still life and to the Paris picture trade.

The record of those years is specific. In 1892 the Paris publisher Borrel issued four of his still lifes as chromolithographs: oranges, melon and oysters, apples and pears, and a basket of peaches. In 1893 his still life Joie et Tristesse sold at the Hôtel Drouot, and that same season a Montreal art company offered more than a dozen of his still lifes, noting that he "paints still life with great success." He also signed work as Bihet and Perez, which helps explain why his own name turns up so rarely today.

This painting belongs squarely to that documented body of work: a fruit still life on a dark ground, in the same subject he was known for in Paris in the 1890s. Hang it in a dining room or kitchen, where still life has always lived, or in a library alongside books and dark wood, and let the light find the fruit. It's warm enough for a modern room and serious enough to anchor a traditional one.

To care for it, keep it out of direct sun and away from fireplaces, heating vents and humid rooms, since a wood panel moves with changes in humidity.
