That is precisely how lamps, candlesticks, standing ashtrays, curtain poles and stair balusters were assembled in brass for most of the twentieth century — a series of separately turned parts, each drilled through, tightened onto a single central rod.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eIt also rules out the most obvious guess. A finial — the ornament that caps a lamp above the shade — is \u003cem\u003eblind-tapped\u003c\/em\u003e: a threaded socket in the bottom only, closed at the top, because a finial is the end of the run and nothing passes beyond it. This is drilled clean through, so it sat in the \u003cem\u003emiddle\u003c\/em\u003e of an assembly with something above it and something below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe gadrooned cup at the top and the plain sphere below are the standard decorative vocabulary of that hardware, and the cup shape in particular is the sort of element used to seat the next component up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe making dates it, and four things agree.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIt is cast, with the casting left raw where it does not show.\u003c\/strong\u003e The interior of the cup is rough and pitted straight from the mould. Later manufacture cleans a part up throughout because machine time is cheap; earlier practice finished only what the eye would reach and left the rest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe ornament is hand-chased.\u003c\/strong\u003e The gadrooned lobes vary in width and depth and carry tool marks through them, and the dimples on the sphere are unevenly sized and unevenly spaced. This was cut by a person.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThere is soft solder on it.\u003c\/strong\u003e Grey metal shows around the rim and across one machined face — the residue of a soldered joint, which means this element was not merely threaded onto a rod but sweated into its assembly as well.
