The palette moves from ochre and russet in the foreground to cool blues in the hills and sky, and the quiet, open composition gives the old wagon room to tell its own story of work and time. The painting is presented in a period wood frame with a linen liner and a metallic inner edge.

History & Provenance

The painting is signed lower right in capitals, “MARIE ROBERTS,” and is attributed to Mahree (Marie) Roberts of Reno, Nevada. Roberts was a founding member, in May 1966, of the Artists Co-op Gallery of Reno, the artist-run gallery in the old brick French laundry at 627 Mill Street, and she later served as its president, accepting the Historic Reno Preservation Society’s award to the gallery in 2002. In 2011 Nevada Magazine wrote that she was “a favorite at the Co-op for her moody and sensitive paintings of Nevada,” and she was still active at the gallery in 2014. Published sources spell her first name Mahree, a phonetic rendering of Marie; the attribution of this canvas rests on that correspondence together with place and subject. No label or inscription accompanies the work, the title used here is descriptive, and the painting is undated; its handling and framing fit the decades of her documented activity in Reno. Mahree Roberts artist page.

Product Details

Field

Detail

Object

Painting, wagon in a field

Origin

Reno, Nevada

Form

Framed painting

Material

Oil on canvas; period wood frame with linen liner and metallic inner edge

Marks

Signed lower right in capitals “MARIE ROBERTS”

Era

c. 1966–1990s

Condition

Vintage condition consistent with age.
