It arrived under a heavy opaque brown-red finish that had swallowed the wood entirely. Stripped and sanded back by hand — the depth varied across the surface to release the figure sleeping underneath — and refinished in cherry and golden oak, it now reads as broad plumes of flame with the sharp jagged edges that give the pattern its name, shifting from warm amber to deep red as light crosses it. Octagonal cast brass ring pulls throughout, each backplate stamped with its pattern number. Interiors fitted with adjustable shelving. The whole sits on a moulded plinth base, and the original maker's brass tab remains fixed inside the drawer: Pendleton — IRWIN.

History & Provenance

The Robert W. Irwin Company was one of Grand Rapids' great houses, formed in 1919 from the merger of the Phoenix Furniture Company, founded 1870, and the Royal Furniture Company, organized 1892. Through the 1920s and '30s Irwin built high-end suites in Georgian, Duncan Phyfe, Biedermeier, and eighteenth-century French and English styles, known for striking matched veneers in walnut, rosewood, mahogany, satinwood, and curly maple.

In 1940 the firm introduced Pendleton — a competitively priced, apartment-scaled line in Georgian, Regency, and Federal styles, launched alongside coordinated Pendleton carpets, lamps, and fabrics. It was a deliberate departure from Irwin's tradition of large, expensive suites, and it was short-lived: the line was not well received, and the conversion of Irwin's factories to wartime production ended it. The company closed in 1953, its plant auctioned that May. A marked Pendleton piece is a survivor from a narrow and unsuccessful chapter of a distinguished maker.

Flame figure of this kind exists only as veneer — it is cut from the crotch of the tree, where the grain doubles back on itself, and has been laid this way on fine cabinetwork since the eighteenth century. The flame was there all along, buried under decades of dark finish. Bringing it back was a matter of knowing how far to go and where to stop.

Product Details

Field

Detail

Object

Bow-front breakfront sideboard / buffet

Maker

Robert W. Behind the doors and drawers goes everything a dining room needs and nothing anyone wants to look at — linens, serving pieces, candles, the good glasses. On top goes the lamp, the tray, the bowl of whatever is in season. The breakfront profile gives it architecture, the flame gives it warmth no factory finish can imitate, and the scale suits a real house rather than a ballroom. It works equally well as an entry console or against a living room wall holding a television and everything that plugs into it — and it will look better in ten years than it does today.

Condition Notes

Refinished in-house: original opaque finish stripped, surface hand-sanded to release the flame figure, finished in cherry and golden oak.
