antique-brass-acanthus-wall-shelf-bracket-no-glass-c-1890-1930
Antique Brass Acanthus Wall Shelf Bracket, No Glass, c. 1890–1930

The Piece

A wall bracket for a glass shelf, made in brass. The frame is a long shallow open rectangle: a plain flat bar along the back that lies against the wall and takes the fixing screws, plain returns at each end, and a front rail carrying the ornament. From the middle of the front rail a flat brass strap runs back and down to the wall as the load brace, finishing below in a cast leaf terminal.

The ornament along the front is a run of cast acanthus scrolls, each a deep C-scroll breaking into a curled leaf, set one after another with short lengths of bare flat bar showing between them. They stand well proud of the rail and the undercutting is deep enough to throw its own shadow.

The brass is unlacquered and has aged accordingly: darkened in the recesses and along the underside, rubbed bright gold on the crown of every scroll where hands and cloths have reached. Castings are crisp throughout with the leaf veining still sharp. Nothing is bent, broken or missing, and the frame sits flat to a wall.

History & Provenance

This is the bracket only. A glass shelf panel drops into the frame and rests on the inner lip of the rail; the scroll band along the front is a gallery, there to stop objects sliding off and to conceal the raw edge of the glass. The glass is not present, and that is stated plainly rather than buried: what is offered is the complete brass bracket, ready to take a new panel. Replacing it is straightforward. The inner dimensions go to any glass shop and a quarter-inch plate panel with polished edges is cut to fit. The frame is the part that cannot be replaced, and it is intact.

The construction is the interesting part, and it is bench work rather than production. The acanthus gallery is not one continuous casting. It is a run of separate cast scroll-and-leaf units, each soldered onto a plain flat brass bar, with short lengths of bare bar still visible between them where the castings stop and start. The side arms and the diagonal brace are fabricated from flat stock and joined by hand. A decorative bracket made to a price is cast in one or two pieces; this one was assembled at a bench from a dozen.

The castings themselves are deep and crisply undercut, with the leaf veining and the scroll volutes still sharp, and the brass is unlacquered. It has darkened in the recesses and rubbed bright on the high points, which is how bare brass ages when nothing is sealing it.

The form is that of a washstand or bathroom glass shelf bracket, a standard fitting in well-appointed houses from the last decades of the nineteenth century into the interwar years: a brass frame screwed to the wall above a basin or a dressing table, carrying a plate-glass shelf. That is what it is for, and it explains every part of it, including the diagonal brace that carries the load back into the wall.

No maker's mark or foundry stamp is visible on any surface photographed. On the construction and the form together it is offered as c. 1890–1930. The screws it was originally hung with would narrow it further, as would the type of solder at the ornament joints.

Product Details

Type

Wall-mounted glass shelf bracket

Material

Unlacquered brass, cast ornament soldered to fabricated flat-bar frame

Ornament

Separately cast acanthus scroll units soldered along the front rail; cast leaf terminal to the brace

Mounting

Two screw holes through the flat back bar; diagonal brace from the front rail to the wall

Glass

Not included.
