It is a cast band that runs in a slow serpentine around the circumference, scalloped in plan and modelled as scrolling branches with leaves laid along them, and at the peaks stand tall cast finials in a flame and bud form. The casting is chased after the pour, the leaves undercut and the veining cut in by hand, and it carries a dark rubbed patina with the gilding worn off the high points where decades of hands and dusters have been.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFour brass hoops descend inside that rim in decreasing diameter, each hung with chains of cut octagon crystal. The chains swag between the hoops at the top and fall straight below them, so the profile gathers inward tier by tier and the whole takes the wedding cake shape the trade names it for. At the centre a cast boss carries the sockets on radiating arms, set inside the crystal rather than above it, with small spear prisms pointing outward between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbove the rim a spray of slender brass rods rises from a cast corona of gadrooned urn form under a collar of acanthus, each rod arching out and down to a formed hook carrying a short chain of crystal. It is the detail that lifts the fixture, and it is what keeps the top from reading as a plain canopy. The suspension chain is cast in pierced ornamental links rather than plain stock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe long bevelled prisms clustered at the base are not original to the fixture. They were selected and fitted in the Viridian Eclection workshop by Walter Hinchman to finish an underside that had lost its terminal, and they add roughly six inches of fall and a good deal of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eHistory \u0026amp; Provenance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe form is the Continental crystal basket, descended from the Empire corbeille and carried forward by the Bohemian, Spanish and Italian houses that supplied the export trade. What separates the good ones from the rest is where the light sits. A candle arm chandelier throws its ornament outward and its light upward; a basket puts the lamps inside the crystal, so every bead in the fixture is lit from behind and the body glows rather than sparkling in patches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe build sets the floor. This fixture was made for electricity and was never anything else. The sockets sit on brass tube arms soldered into a cast central boss, purpose built and set at the height that lights the tiers, with no candle cups, no converted tubes and no filled sockets anywhere in the frame. That places it after domestic electrification rather than before it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe construction sets the ceiling. Cast and chased ornament in solid brass with gilding worn through to the metal, bead chains strung on individually formed wire pins, arms soldered into a cast boss, and a suspension chain cast in ornamental links are all pre war practice. What followed uses stamped spiders, cast alloy ornament under bright electroplate and plain stock chain, and none of that is present here. Continental production of metal and crystal for the export trade stopped with the war, and what resumed afterwards was built the cheaper way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn that evidence it is offered as c. 1910 to 1940. This is not a hall fixture or a powder room fixture. It wants a dining table, a stairwell, a bedroom with height, or a shop floor where one thing has to carry the whole ceiling, and at that scale it does work that three smaller fixtures cannot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe internal lamping is the practical advantage. Because the bulbs sit inside the crystal, the fixture lights itself from within and sends soft refracted light down rather than glare out, so it can hang lower over a table than an arm chandelier can without blinding the person across it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe frame is the part that will still be good in fifty years. Crystal can be replaced and chains can be restrung, but cast and chased ornament with a worn original gilding cannot be reproduced at any sensible cost, and it is what separates this from the bright plated fixtures that fill the market.
