Hand-Painted German Romantic Porcelain Vase
c.1890–1910 | Gilt Collar | Rococo Revival Scene
The Piece
A late 19th-century German porcelain cabinet vase, richly decorated with hand-painted roses and a romantic courtly scene.
The form is elegant and vertical, crowned with a heavily gilded collar featuring delicate ornamental banding. Around the body, lush rose garlands wrap in soft pinks, creams, and reds — framing a classical figure in 18th-century dress playing a lute.
The underside is stamped “Germany” and molded with shape number 0113.
This is decorative porcelain made to be admired.
Historical Context
Following the 1891 McKinley Tariff Act, German porcelain exported to the United States was required to be marked “Germany.” This vase falls squarely into that era.
During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, German factories in Bavaria and Thuringia produced romantic revival porcelain for international markets. These pieces were meant for display cabinets, mantels, and parlor tables — not daily use.
The style blends:
-
Rococo revival romanticism
-
Hand-painted floral naturalism
-
Gilded decorative luxury
It reflects a time when homes embraced ornate detail and sentimental imagery.
Decorative Details
What makes this piece stand out is the layering:
The roses are softly shaded and dimensional, with subtle tonal transitions rather than flat color application. The figure is delicately rendered, with careful facial detailing and refined costume painting.
The gilt collar shows age-appropriate softening — not brassy, but warm.
This is not minimalist porcelain. It is unabashedly romantic.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
-
No visible cracks
-
No visible structural chips
-
Expected light wear to gilt at rim
-
Minor age spotting inside collar consistent with time
Two incised X marks on underside likely factory control marks.
Structurally sound and display-ready.
Why It Belongs in Your Home
This is the kind of piece that shifts a space.
It works beautifully:
-
On a dark wood console
-
Inside a curio cabinet
-
On a mantle with brass candlesticks
-
Paired with oil portraits or gilded frames
It brings softness to modern interiors and depth to traditional ones.
It also photographs extremely well — which matters more than people admit.
