The ground glaze is a deep chocolate brown that reads as black where it lies thick and warms to translucent amber where it thins over the curve. Across the shoulder a second glaze, an opaque chartreuse yellow, has been poured and trailed over the first in a radiating pattern of broad strokes that gather and branch like palm fronds. The yellow runs downward under its own weight and stops in an uneven wavy line around the belly, leaving the lower body in unbroken dark glaze. Where the yellow pools it stands up thick and granular with fine pinholing across its surface. Where it pulls thin the dark ground shows through in angular reserves, so the pattern reads as light on dark from across a room and resolves into layered glaze up close.

The interior was left unglazed. Fine buff clay and the soft horizontal rings of throwing are visible inside the neck, and the exterior glaze stops in a clean line at the inner edge of the lip. The base is likewise unglazed and flat rather than cut as a ring foot, trimmed on the wheel with radial chatter from the tool still plainly legible.

History & Provenance

The jar carries no marks of any kind. There is no factory stamp, no incised or impressed seal, no mold number and no country of origin mark, and so there is no documentary evidence here on which to hang a maker, a region or a date. What the piece does carry is construction evidence, and that is what the dating above rests on.

It was thrown on a wheel and trimmed on the wheel, the exterior dipped in the dark glaze from the rim and a second glaze poured over the shoulder afterward. The unglazed interior is the most telling of these traits. Decorative vases are ordinarily glazed or at least slipped inside, while utilitarian jars made to hold dry goods frequently are not, which places the working method closer to a village or production pottery than to a decorating studio. The same reading is supported by the flat trimmed foot and by the frank, unfussy handling of the poured glaze.

The absence of an origin mark is worth stating plainly rather than leaning on. Imported ware was routinely marked with a paper label rather than an impressed stamp, and paper labels do not survive a century of handling, so a bare base sets an outer limit on what can be claimed and never establishes an early date on its own. The underside does show genuine age of surface. It is scratched in many directions from generations of being set down and moved on hard surfaces, with iron spotting bloomed through the clay and olive mineral deposit settled into the low points, and the high points rubbed smooth. That is wear earned over a long life, which is a different thing from documented age. The range given is the one the construction and the surface will carry honestly.

Product Details

Form

Ovoid jar with short collared neck and everted lip

Construction

Wheel thrown, foot trimmed on the wheel

Body

Fine buff clay, visible at the interior and base

Ground Glaze

Dark chocolate brown to black, glossy, dipped

Decoration

Opaque chartreuse yellow poured and trailed over the shoulder

Interior

Unglazed, not watertight

Base

Flat and unglazed, radial trimming chatter

Marks

None

Attribution

Unattributed

Date

c. 1920 to 1970

Condition

Glaze intact with no chips or cracks seen at the rim, shoulder or foot. The yellow against near black is the boldest contrast a potter can reach for, and laid on in broad poured strokes it gives the jar a graphic force that smaller, more finely decorated ceramics never manage. Set it alone on a console, a mantel or an open shelf where the pattern has room to be seen, and it will anchor the wall behind it the way a painting does.

Because the interior is unglazed and porous the jar will not hold water. Use it dry, with branches, grasses, pampas or stems that need no vessel, or drop in a glass or metal liner if you want cut flowers. That limitation is also part of the appeal. It is the honest mark of a jar made to do a job rather than to sit behind glass, and it has the surface and the scars to prove the job was done.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0651/0093/9369/files/02_a2a2fce7-f174-48b7-aace-a49478c9069e.jpg?v=1791688778
https://viridianeclection.com/products/hand-thrown-ovoid-jar-yellow-poured-glaze-on-black-c-1920-1970
