The apron is a plain board on all four sides, and the surface above it is uninterrupted, which makes the table a good deal more useful as a surface than its drawered cousins and a good deal less useful for hiding things.

The legs are the structure and the ornament at once. Each has a square block at apron height, a short collar, a swelling baluster, then a long taper to a second square block where the stretchers meet it, and finally a small turned bun foot. The turning is crisp and the profiles repeat exactly leg to leg.

The stretcher arrangement is worth describing because it is not the usual one. A rectangular box stretcher runs the full perimeter at low level, and two short cross rails run between the long stretchers, dividing the lower frame into three bays. There is no shelf, and the rails carry no rabbet, no nail holes and no sign that one was ever fitted.

The top is a single flat board with a simple molded edge, stripped and sanded back to bare wood with traces of the old finish still caught in the molding.

History & Provenance

The table is unmarked and has to be read from the way it was made.

The turnings are machine work. The profiles are crisp, the collars and swellings land in the same place on every leg, and the bun feet are turned in one with the leg rather than applied. That kind of repeatability belongs to powered lathe production, which puts the floor after the eighteen seventies and eighties. The joinery is mortise and tenon into squared blocks at both apron and stretcher height, which is the standard vernacular method of the period and the reason the frame is still tight.

The form itself is the common American turned leg side table or stand, made in very large numbers from roughly the eighteen nineties into the nineteen twenties, after which the box stretcher drops out of commercial production for this kind of table. That sets the ceiling. Nothing on the piece argues for a date outside that span.

The paint is a later decoration and should be understood as such. Two colors were used, a soft pink on the turned members and a pale blue green on the flat rails, aprons and square blocks, and both were laid over an earlier brown finished surface rather than over bare wood. Where the paint has flaked, brown shows through, not another color. A pale ground is visible at some chip edges. The scheme reads as a decorative repaint rather than a factory or original finish, and both layers are now extensively lost, which is what gives the base its present look.

At some point after that the top was stripped and sanded back while the base was left alone. Whether that was a refinish abandoned halfway or a deliberate contrast is not recorded on the piece. Either way it is the state it is offered in, and the two surfaces now read as a pale timber top over a chipped colored frame.

Product Details

Era

c. 1890 to 1920. It has arrived at its color rather than been assigned one, and it brings warmth into a room without matching anything, which is the hardest thing to buy.

The bare top is the practical half of the same argument. It takes a glass, a lamp or a stack of books without anyone worrying about the finish, and the pale timber keeps the piece from reading heavy against the color below.

It is a useful size and an honest height. Beside a chair, at the end of a sofa, in a hall, under a window, or as a nightstand for someone who does not want a drawer. The stretcher frame also makes it steadier than most tables this light.

For a dealer or a designer, surface like this is the part that cannot be manufactured convincingly. Factory distressing is everywhere now and it always reads as pattern. This flaked where hands and feet and furniture polish actually took it off, and at close range the difference is obvious.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0651/0093/9369/files/01_4cefe4bb-4bb9-48b5-9cad-ef6e70613cd3.jpg?v=1790818779
