The grip swells into a bulb at the back where the palm sits; the front of the loop rises into a knuckle bar; and the nose runs forward and drops slightly, presenting the blade below the line of the hand. The whole shape exists so that a blade can be drawn hard toward the body without the knuckles reaching the work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe blade is a plain trapezoidal utility blade, held between the body and a steel clamp plate and drawn down by a wing nut on a threaded stud. The blade sits in a slot so its exposure can be set and reset, and the plate is registered by a rivet beside the stud. On the opposite face the slot is repeated and closed by three slotted round-head screws. Every fastener on the tool is slotted; there is no Phillips, hex or star drive anywhere on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe maker's legend is cast into the body rather than printed or applied: GUARDIAN ANGLE KNIFE arcing over a diamond device holding the AJC monogram, with the catalogue number 57-MCGA beneath. The diamond stands proud of the surface, and the red has worn off it entirely, so the monogram now reads as bare metal set in a red field. Elsewhere the paint has chipped away in plates over the handle bulb and along the spine, exposing grey metal that shows no red oxide at all while the steel screws and clamp plate are heavily rust-stained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eHistory \u0026amp; Provenance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAJC began with one tool. A.J. Crookston, a roofer, made hatchets for his own crew and started selling them to other roofers as they asked for them, and the firm carried his initials. His son Jim took over in 1962 and turned a single-tool maker into a full line: roofing, siding and gutter tools built to the pattern a working contractor would want. The Guardian Angle Knife belongs to that expanded catalogue rather than to the hatchet years, which sets the earliest it can be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe knife itself is a shingle knife. Asphalt shingles are cut from the back, hard and fast, with the blade pulled toward the body across a bundle or a roof deck, and the closed loop is the answer to what that does to a hand. The angled nose lets the blade meet the work at a cutting rake while the wrist stays straight, which is where the name comes from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe number 57-MCGA is still AJC's catalogue number for the Guardian Angle Knife, but the tool it now names is a different machine: an aluminium body with a moulded ergonomic grip, a retractable blade and a three-blade kit of hook, bowtie and utility patterns. This example is the configuration that number carried before that revision — a fixed blade set by hand in a slot and clamped under a wing nut, with slotted screws throughout and the legend cast into the body rather than printed on it. The tool carries no warning legend, no country-of-origin mark and no barcode panel, and those absences give a ceiling only, not a floor. The body is a light non-ferrous casting on the evidence of the exposed metal, which has not rusted anywhere while the steel fittings have.
