Each is cut from a single board in a long S curve that swells out at the top, pulls in at the waist and flares back out to the foot, so the whole case reads as two shaped brackets carrying a drawer rather than as a box. The front edges are moulded to follow the curve the whole way down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe top is solid birch, three boards edge joined, and the figure in it is unusual for the wood: a soft mottled cloud pattern with flame and blister running across all three boards under a warm honey stain. The edge is moulded and slightly overhung.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe drawer sits high and runs the full width, with a moulded edge and two small black turned knobs set close together so it reads as a pair of drawers from across a room. Pressed hardboard of this type entered American furniture production from the later 1920s and had become the standard back panel through the 1930s, so it sets a floor. Before it, the back of a piece like this would have been thin solid boards or a plywood panel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEverything else is solid wood. The sides, the top, the drawer front, the shelf and the bracket base are all timber rather than veneer over core, which in a small bedroom piece of this period means a middle grade maker rather than the cheapest end of the trade.
