A single masted barge with a green sail lies drawn up on the strand with a lighter alongside, and in the foreground a man rows a flat skiff across still water that holds the whole town in reflection.

The bank is a working timber yard. Felled logs lie stacked and roped at the water's edge, a pair of horses in harness, one black and one grey, are hauling a trunk up the slope, and a man in a blue coat leans into the traces beside them while another in red stands out on the logs with a pole.

Behind them the town climbs the bank in half timbered houses with overhanging upper floors, external stairs, tiled roofs in red and green, and a square watchtower with a clock and a steep hipped cap. Pennants fly from the gables. Above everything rise the twin spires of a Gothic church, painted pale grey against the light so they read as distance rather than mass.

The figures are the pleasure of it. There are more than twenty of them and each is drawn rather than dabbed: women in bodices, aprons and white caps carrying baskets, a group seated on barrels outside a tavern, a child on the ground with a dog, a man in a broad hat and red coat, people resting in a moored boat at the lower right. The paint is worked up thickly in the foreground and thinly in the sky, and the impasto holds real light across the roofs and the water.

The frame is a deep moulded composition on wood, run with a continuous acanthus scroll and finished in near black over a warm metallic ground, with a plain gilt green velvet faced liner inside it.

History & Provenance

The canvas is signed at the lower right in dark paint and dated beside the signature. The date reads 1975. It is written in the artist's own hand in the same dark pigment as the name, laid into the wet ground of the log pile at the bottom edge of the composition, which is where a painter signs a finished canvas rather than where a later hand would add an inscription.

That gives the picture a single year rather than a bracket, and it is worth saying plainly how unusual that is. Most decorative oils of this kind carry a signature and nothing else, and are sold across a thirty or forty year guess. This one does not need the guess.

The surname itself is a different matter. The hand is cursive and heavily compressed, the strokes run together, and it is not transcribed here rather than guessed at. A second faint mark sits at the lower left over the water and is equally unreadable. A raking light photograph of the signature, taken square on with a lamp held flat to the canvas, would very likely resolve the name and is the single thing that would move this picture from signed to attributed.

The date also confirms what the materials already said. This is a twentieth century painting of a historical subject, not a historical painting. The costume places the scene in roughly the seventeenth or eighteenth century and the architecture is that of a south German or Alsatian river town, but the commercially prepared canvas, the stretcher, the handling and the cast composition frame are all of the artist's own period.

That combination is a genre in its own right. The romantic old town on a river, with its log rafts, its barge, its market crowd and its cathedral spires, was painted continuously through the last century for the decorative trade, often worked up from earlier prints rather than from the place itself. The town here is convincingly built but is not a topographical record of any identifiable one, and it is not offered as such.

The frame is a cast composition moulding on a wood core, a twentieth century reproduction of a seventeenth century scroll pattern, and it is original to the picture as presented.

Product Details

Era

1975. Dated from the canvas itself. The year is painted beside the signature at the lower right in the artist's own hand and in the same pigment, laid into the ground of the composition rather than added afterwards. From across a room it reads as a warm, well composed town on a river. From two feet away it turns into a hundred small decisions: the dog on the ground, the woman with the basket crossing the logs, the washing on a balcony rail, the pennants stiff in the wind. Pictures that keep giving at that range are far rarer than pictures that photograph well.

The colour does a great deal of work in a room. Ochre, umber, tile red and the cool grey of the spires against a pale sky will hang comfortably on white plaster, on a dark library wall, on panelling or on wallpaper, and the gold green liner ties it to warm wood without needing anything else.

It is also the right size to be useful. At about two feet across it will carry a mantel, a stair landing, a console or the space over a chest on its own, and it needs no grouping and no mat.

For a dealer or a designer, a signed and dated oil at this scale is the sort of thing that anchors a booth or a room and sells to somebody who did not come in looking for a painting. A year on the canvas is also what lets you catalogue it properly, price it without hedging, and tell a customer exactly what they are buying.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0651/0093/9369/files/01_8093c7a4-f845-453b-9426-c2fb773b6ed6.jpg?v=1790588406
