Product Overview
The Piece
A large and substantial vintage Gothic Revival wall candle sconce, dating to approximately c. 1950s, with a dramatic openwork backplate, fleur-de-lis finial, and single projecting taper candle holder. Cast in heavy metal with a silvery aged finish, the piece has the presence of architectural salvage without needing to pretend it was ripped from a haunted French abbey. Tempting, but no.
The tall backplate features interlaced scrollwork, floral accents, and a strong fleur-de-lis crest at the top, giving it an old-world silhouette suited for French Revival, Gothic, Spanish Revival, chapel-inspired, or dark romantic interiors. The single candle cup projects outward from the lower portion with a small drip tray beneath, creating a sculptural wall accent even when not in use.
At approximately 12 inches tall and notably heavy for its size, this piece has far more presence than lightweight decorative sconces, making it especially strong as a standalone wall accent, hallway piece, mantel-side detail, or part of a collected gallery wall.
History
This sconce likely dates to the 1950s, a period when Gothic Revival, French Provincial, Spanish Revival, and old-world European-inspired decor were widely adapted for American interiors. Decorative cast metal wall sconces like this were often used to bring architectural character into homes, especially in dining rooms, entryways, studies, and formal living spaces.
The fleur-de-lis motif, long associated with French decorative arts and heraldic design, gives the piece its strongest visual identity. While the form references much older Gothic and ecclesiastical metalwork, this example is best understood as a mid-century decorative revival piece, not an 1800s antique. Which is fine. Not everything needs to have survived a crusade to be interesting.

Why It Belongs In Your Home
This sconce has the kind of dramatic, architectural presence that instantly makes a wall feel intentional. The openwork cast metal frame gives it visual weight without feeling solid or bulky, while the fleur-de-lis crest adds that French Gothic romance people keep trying to buy from mass-produced decor, with varying degrees of emotional success.
It would be striking placed in an entryway, hallway, study, dining room, powder room, or bedroom. Styled with taper candles, antique mirrors, oil paintings, dark wood, linen, stone, or aged brass, it brings depth and atmosphere without requiring a full medieval personality overhaul.
Its larger size and heavier construction make it especially appealing for collectors of vintage wall sconces, Gothic Revival decor, French country accents, or old-world architectural pieces.
