A wonderfully time-worn schoolbook from the very end of the 1920s: David Saville Muzzey's The American People, copyright 1929, bound in olive-green cloth with an embossed title. What makes it special is the life lived in its margins — the endpapers and flyleaves are covered in period pencil-and-ink student signatures, doodles, sweetheart scribbles, and study notes, dated to 1929 and stamped by the Hi-School Store of Hoquiam, Washington. Inside are handsome engraved plates and color foldout maps (a physical map of the U.S., the Civil War, Jefferson's America, a specimen of fifteenth-century Venetian printing).
