Product Overview

The Piece

An elegant early 20th-century American serving platter by Smith-Phillips China Company, produced in East Liverpool, Ohio, one of the most important pottery centers in the United States. Marked “Smith-Phillips China Princess” with the code C 26, this oval platter dates most closely to circa 1926, placing it just a few years before Smith-Phillips merged into the American China Corporation in 1929.

The platter features a softly ivory semi-porcelain body with a refined border in cobalt blue, gilt-tone yellow, black geometric accents, and small rose floral sprays. Its long oval well gives the piece a classic serving form, while the aged glaze crazing and warm surface patina give it the kind of honest antique character people now try to fake with distressing kits, because apparently time itself needed outsourcing.

Design & Construction

Smith-Phillips specialized in semi-vitreous and semi-porcelain wares, a durable ceramic category widely used for American tableware in the early 1900s. This platter has the weight, glaze depth, and softly rounded molded form typical of domestic dinnerware production from the East Liverpool pottery district.

The border decoration combines early 20th-century decorative revival influences: blue geometric banding, gilt-style scrollwork, and small floral reserves. The result is formal without being overly precious, making it suitable for display, layered table styling, or as a collector’s accent in a traditional, cottage, English country, or collected antique interior.

The visible crazing throughout the glaze is consistent with age and use in semi-porcelain ware from this period. Rather than detracting from the piece, it adds surface depth and confirms the platter’s period character.

History & Provenance

Smith-Phillips China Company operated out of East Liverpool, Ohio, historically known as one of America’s major pottery centers. The company was founded in 1900 and produced decorated semi-porcelain dinnerware, hotel ware, and household ceramics before merging into the American China Corporation in 1929. The “C 26” mark on this piece aligns with known 1920s Smith-Phillips date-code practices, supporting a circa 1926 attribution.

The “Princess” marking appears on multiple decorated Smith-Phillips wares and is best understood as a line/body designation rather than a single decorative pattern. This makes the platter especially appealing for collectors who appreciate early American tableware, East Liverpool ceramics, or antique serving pieces with identifiable maker history.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This platter brings the softness and utility of early American tableware into a modern collected interior. It works beautifully displayed upright in a plate rack, layered into a dining room hutch, used as a centerpiece tray, or styled beneath candles, books, fruit, or seasonal arrangements.

Its value is in the combination of form, age, maker, and surface character: a true early 20th-century American ceramic with a readable mark, decorative border, and the kind of imperfect glaze story that makes antique pieces feel alive instead of sterile. Heaven forbid objects have history.
