The Piece
A neatly made little wall rack in warm mahogany, and a study in restraint. The upper block stands proud of the backboard and is cut with four narrow vertical slots flanking a central arched keyhole — the arrangement of a toothbrush-and-tumbler holder, sized to take four brushes with a tube or handle through the middle. Below, the board steps back to a small shelf finished with a molded, reeded lip that catches and holds a glass. The edges are softly eased, the grain is straight and richly figured, and the finish has mellowed to a honeyed amber.
Best of all is the mark: a small branded armorial burned into the face above the slots — two rampant lions bearing upraised swords, flanking a shield charged with a gothic R. The reverse retains a paper inspection label reading PASSED / E.G.M.C.J., along with the original keyhole hanger and its ring of small nails.
History & Provenance
Wall-mounted bath fittings in wood belong to a narrow window in domestic design — the decades before molded plastic and chrome swept the bathroom entirely. A mahogany rack like this one was made to be screwed beside a sink, holding the household's brushes above and a tumbler below, and its careful moldings and eased edges reflect a moment when even the most utilitarian fixture was expected to be joinery rather than hardware.
The branded armorial is the piece's real intrigue. Heraldic maker's brands of this kind were used by cabinet shops and export houses through the mid-twentieth century as a quality mark, and the surviving PASSED inspection sticker on the reverse points to a factory with a formal quality-control step — the practice of export manufacturers of the 1940s through 1960s. The specific crest with its gothic R remains unidentified, which leaves this genuinely open: the mark is crisp and complete, and someone with the right reference will eventually put a name to it.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
Small wooden wall fittings are the sleeper category of collecting — inexpensive, easy to hang, and far more interesting on a wall than anything bought new. Use it as intended in a powder room, with brushes above and a heavy pressed-glass tumbler on the shelf. Or ignore the original purpose entirely: the slots take letters, postcards, or a phone; the shelf takes a small plant, a candle, or a stack of matchboxes. It's the kind of object that makes a bathroom or an entryway feel considered rather than furnished, and the branded crest gives it a story worth telling to anyone who notices it.
