The Piece
Beautifully understated and unmistakably handmade, this early California pottery soap dish exemplifies the Arts & Crafts belief that even the most utilitarian household objects should possess beauty and craftsmanship. Produced by Bund Pottery, the piece is hand-formed in warm earthenware and finished with a softly variegated rose, blush, and brown glaze that pools naturally within its hand-incised floral decoration.
Raised on three integrated feet and pierced with central drainage holes, the dish was thoughtfully designed to elevate a bar of soap above standing water, allowing it to dry properly while adding an artistic element to the washstand or vanity. The gently scalloped rim, visible throwing marks, and subtle firing variations ensure that each example carries its own unique character.
Today, it functions equally well as a period bathroom accessory, jewelry dish, or decorative accent, bringing nearly a century of quiet craftsmanship into the home.
History
Produced by Bund Pottery of California, this handcrafted soap dish reflects the influence of the American Arts & Crafts movement and the growing popularity of California studio pottery during the early twentieth century. Bund Pottery became known for creating functional ceramic objects that emphasized honest materials, hand craftsmanship, and organic decoration over factory uniformity.
Dating to approximately 1925–1945, this example embodies the movement's philosophy that everyday household objects should be thoughtfully designed and built to last. The soft matte glaze, hand-incised decoration, and practical elevated form remain hallmarks of early California art pottery.
Condition & Provenance
The underside bears the impressed BUND maker's mark, identifying the piece as a product of Bund Pottery, California.
Presented in very good vintage condition with expected signs of age and use. The glaze exhibits attractive natural variation and honest wear within the soap well from decades of intended use. Minor firing irregularities are original to manufacture and characteristic of hand-crafted pottery. All three original feet remain intact, and the drainage holes are clean and unobstructed.
Condition Rating: 8.5/10
