Product Overview
The Piece
A striking antique Dutch Plate trumpet bud vase with a tall flared silhouette, hexagonal mouth, and richly embossed scenic decoration. The vase features raised Dutch village imagery, including small figural scenes, architectural details, scrollwork, and old-world decorative panels that wrap around the body.
Its narrow trumpet form gives it an elegant vertical profile, making it ideal for a single stem, dried floral, feather, or sculptural shelf styling. Dramatic enough to look important, small enough not to demand its own insurance policy. A rare mercy.
Design & Construction
This piece is made from silver-plated metal, marked “DUTCH PLATE” on the interior base. The exterior is decorated with repoussé-style raised scenes and ornamental scrollwork. The form has a hexagonal flared rim that tapers into a slender stem and rests on a matching hexagonal foot.
The surface has a darkened aged patina with areas of plating wear, tarnish, oxidation, and rubbing to high points. These details are consistent with older plated decorative metalware. Because there is no visible sterling or purity mark, this should be listed as silver plate, not sterling. Apparently accuracy is still legal.
History & Provenance
Dutch scenic silver-plated wares became popular decorative export pieces during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often featuring romanticized imagery of village life, windmills, ships, taverns, domestic interiors, and traditional figures. These pieces were designed to evoke Dutch heritage and old European domestic charm, often for the Western decorative market.
This vase likely belongs to that tradition of Dutch revival / scenic silverplate, where everyday forms such as vases, candlesticks, trays, and small tablewares were embellished with nostalgic figural scenes. The “Dutch Plate” mark appears on comparable scenic silver-plated vases and candlesticks, including examples with windmill, ship, and village motifs.
Condition
Good antique / vintage condition with visible age-related wear. The vase shows tarnish, oxidation, plating wear, darkened patina, rubbing to raised details, and surface scratches. Interior shows age, discoloration, and the visible “DUTCH PLATE” mark. The rim appears slightly uneven from age and handling. No major cracks or breaks are visible in the provided photos, but the base and stem should be checked for stability before final listing.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This piece brings moody old-world texture in a compact footprint. It works beautifully on a mantel, bookshelf, writing desk, bar cabinet, powder-room shelf, or layered antique vignette. The raised Dutch village scenes give it more narrative depth than a plain bud vase, because apparently even a single flower needed a tiny historical stage.
Style it with dried lavender, a single dark rose, a feather, or leave it empty as a sculptural object.
