Product Overview
The Piece
A hand-painted Delftware candlestick from the mid-twentieth century, bearing the familiar blue-on-white palette associated with Dutch tin-glazed ceramics. Its form is balanced and architectural, turned with sculptural rhythm from a wide foot to a gently flared cup.
This is not a reproduction of grandeur, but a domestic object — one made for modest interiors, daily rituals, and candlelight softened by glaze.
Marked D.P. Delft, it belongs to the postwar continuation of a much older tradition, where Dutch workshops echoed the motifs and techniques first developed in the seventeenth century.
Design & Construction
→ Tin-glazed earthenware with glossy overglaze
→ Hand-painted cobalt decoration in stylized floral forms
→ Traditional stepped base with knopped stem
→ Marked on the base: D.P. Delft with painter’s number
→ Made in the Netherlands, mid-century
The surface is quiet but confident — brushstrokes visible, cobalt pooled in recesses, form and pattern working in unison.
Historical Context
By the 1950s, Delftware had long since moved from courtly status symbol to cherished vernacular art. Workshops continued to produce pieces for both local use and export, often hand-painted by decorators who trained within a lineage.
This candlestick may have sat on a farmhouse table or a city windowsill. It was made not to impress, but to accompany — with its light, its presence, and its modest craftsmanship.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition.
→ No chips or cracks
→ Glossy, even glaze
→ Hand-painting intact with natural variation
→ Minor base wear appropriate to age
Stable, usable, and visually complete.
