The Piece

Mid-Century California Ceramic Saucer
Franciscan Ware, glazed earthenware
Made in California, USA
c.1955–1965

A mid-century ceramic saucer produced by Franciscan Ware, featuring a sculptural radiating swirl pattern finished in a soft aqua glaze. The design relies entirely on molded form and color, a hallmark of Franciscan’s post-war approach to casual American tableware.

The shallow well and gently flared rim reflect Franciscan’s emphasis on ease and everyday use rather than formal presentation. Light catches the rippled surface unevenly, giving the piece visual movement without applied decoration or patterning.

Historical Context

During the 1950s and early 1960s, Franciscan Ware helped redefine American dining by moving away from rigid, European-influenced table settings toward informal, modern living. Produced in California, Franciscan ceramics embraced sculptural form, regional color palettes, and flexibility of use.

Rather than ornate patterns, pieces like this relied on texture and glaze to create visual interest. They were designed to be mixed, handled daily, and integrated into relaxed domestic routines that reflected post-war optimism and changing lifestyles.

Condition + Updates

Very good vintage condition.

The saucer shows light surface wear consistent with age and normal use. No cracks, chips, or repairs are observed. The glaze remains glossy, and kiln stilt marks are visible on the base, consistent with original firing.

Why It Belongs in Your Home

This piece works quietly and confidently.

Its sculptural surface makes it suitable for use as a saucer, bread plate, or trinket dish, while its restrained color allows it to integrate easily into both mid-century and contemporary interiors. It layers well with other ceramics or stands alone as a subtle design accent.

It doesn’t demand attention. It earns it.
