French Cut Crystal & Ormolu Lamp

French Cut Crystal & Ormolu Lamp

Description of the Lamp

Front: A brilliant-cut crystal globe shade, deeply faceted with starburst and diamond motifs, bound at the equator with an ornate gilt bronze (ormolu) band. Topped with a gilded acorn finial, the globe casts light with shimmering reflections.

Base: The stem features a classical gilt bronze figure draped in flowing robes, supporting the lamp in an allegorical pose. Below, a faceted crystal accent and foliate arms lead into a circular gilt base with a white marble ring inset. The base terminates in four scrolling ormolu feet with acanthus detailing.

History

French lighting of this type was produced from the late 1800s into the early 20th century, with revivals and high-quality exports continuing into the mid-20th century. Parisian artisans and workshops specialized in combining finely cut crystal with gilt bronze mounts, selling such pieces through luxury shops for boudoirs, parlors, and salons. These lamps were both functional and decorative, a hallmark of French craftsmanship.

Style

Form & Style: Rococo Revival / French Neoclassical, blending Louis XV exuberance (scrolls, foliage, allegorical figure) with Louis XVI refinement (symmetry, crystal, acorn finial). The design captures the opulent elegance of French decorative arts, while remaining versatile enough to suit later Hollywood Regency interiors inspired by this tradition.
