Hunt Club Embossed Creamware Plate – T.G. Green & Co., England, c.1955–1965 (Set Of 7)

The Piece

A beautifully modeled mid-century English ironstone plate from T.G. Green & Co., produced under the Hunt Club line between 1955 and 1965. The wide rim is sculpted in deep relief with a continuous pastoral tableau—riders on horseback, hounds, cattle, and woodland figures—encircling a smooth central well. The warm ivory glaze has developed a fine, even crazing that enhances both its age and presence. A decorative object in its own right, this plate captures the nostalgic spirit of English sporting culture translated into mid-century ceramic design.

Design & Construction

→ Form & Style:

The plate features a broad rim lined with a raised scenic frieze: equestrians mid-hunt, working dogs, trees, cottages, livestock, and rolling countryside vignettes. Light and shadow play across the relief, animating the narrative. The shape is classically mid-century English—clean, functional, and subtly sculptural—while the subject matter nods to Georgian and Victorian sporting art traditions.

→ Material:

High-quality ironstone with a warm ivory glaze. The body is durable and slightly weighty, typical of T.G. Green’s mid-century output. Crazing throughout the glaze is stable and desirable, contributing to the plate’s vintage charm.

→ Production Technique:

Slip-cast ironstone with a molded relief border applied around the rim, dipped in glaze, and fired to a unified ivory tone. The embossed details remain crisp and dimensional. The underside carries the printed mark:

History & Provenance

The Hunt Club series was produced by T.G. Green & Co., a noted English pottery best known for its Cornishware but also for mid-century ironstone table services. Made during the 1955–1965 period, the line reflects Britain’s enduring affection for equestrian sporting culture. These embossed scenic plates were marketed both as functional dinnerware and decorative accent pieces, often used in traditional dining rooms, sporting lodges, and English-country-inspired interiors. Today, they are sought after by collectors of mid-century English ceramics and fox-hunting memorabilia.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition with stable, attractive crazing throughout. No chips, cracks, or repairs observed. Relief detail is sharp, glaze is well-preserved, and the plate displays beautifully.
