The Piece
Bold, sculptural, and unmistakably American studio glass, this signed vase is attributed to Michael Nourot (1949-2015), one of California’s most respected contemporary glass artists. Its low, rounded silhouette is wrapped in a luminous field of shimmering aventurine gold, layered beneath floating ribbons of black and deep ruby red with scattered gilded inclusions that shift dramatically as the light moves across the surface.
The broad shoulder and sharply defined black collar create a striking architectural profile, while the complex internal layering gives the vessel remarkable visual depth from every angle. Signed and numbered “46/1052” on the underside, the vase exemplifies Nourot’s mastery of color application and controlled movement within molten glass.
Equally compelling displayed on its own or with minimalist floral stems, the piece bridges late twentieth-century studio craftsmanship with timeless contemporary design.
History
Michael Nourot was among the leading figures of the American Studio Glass movement on the West Coast. Working primarily in California, he became known for richly layered color fields, metallic aventurine inclusions, and fluid abstract compositions that emphasized the movement of molten glass rather than traditional cut decoration.
This example reflects many of the hallmarks that made Nourot’s work highly collectible: saturated black glass, suspended ruby accents, shimmering gold aventurine, and an organic, hand-formed profile. His works remain sought after by collectors of contemporary American studio glass and frequently appear through specialized galleries and auction houses.

Why It Endures
Exceptional studio glass possesses the rare ability to feel simultaneously sculptural and alive. Nourot achieved this by trapping movement inside the vessel itself, creating compositions that reveal new details as light passes through the glass. This vase functions as both decorative object and fine art, making it equally at home in a curated modern interior, a collector’s cabinet, or alongside contemporary ceramics and sculpture.
