Product Overview
The Piece
A charming mid-century glazed ceramic lidded dish, softly finished in cream-white and blush pink with a raised pineapple-and-fruit motif across the lid. The form is low, rounded, and beautifully tactile, with a scalloped lobed body that gives the piece a gentle sense of movement and hand-finished character.
The underside of both the lid and base are hand-incised “CHERYL / 67,” giving the piece a personal, dated quality while preserving the mystery of its maker. It is best described as a mid-century studio or hobby ceramic piece, likely dating to c. 1967, with the maker otherwise unidentified.
Its soft palette, glossy glaze, and sculptural fruit relief make it a lovely accent for a kitchen shelf, entry table, vanity, hutch, or collected ceramic display.
History
The pineapple has a long history in decorative arts as a symbol of welcome and hospitality, appearing in architecture, furniture, textiles, silver, and ceramics from the 18th century onward. Smithsonian Libraries notes the pineapple’s established role as a hospitality motif, while Colonial Williamsburg also documents its use across decorative forms including ceramics and furniture.
This piece brings that tradition into a mid-century domestic form: decorative, useful, and personal. The molded relief and fitted lid suggest ceramic mold work, while the incised “CHERYL / 67” gives the object a distinctly handmade or hand-finished presence. Without a factory mark or documented maker, the safest attribution is mid-century glazed ceramic, maker unidentified, inscribed 1967.
Why It Belongs In Your Home
This is the kind of small vintage object that adds warmth without demanding attention like a badly behaved chandelier. The blush pink glaze softens the form, while the raised fruit motif gives it texture, charm, and a quiet hospitality symbolism that works beautifully in layered interiors.
Place it on a kitchen shelf, coffee station, entry console, vanity, or antique hutch. It can hold wrapped sweets, matches, jewelry, keys, or simply exist as a sculptural ceramic accent. Because of the visible crazing and age-related wear, it is best enjoyed decoratively rather than used for open food storage.
Its appeal lies in the combination of form, date, and personal inscription: a small mid-century ceramic piece with just enough mystery to feel collected, not mass-produced.
