Product Overview

A matched porcelain creamer and open sugar bowl distinguished by softly scalloped forms, rococo-inspired handles, and warm floral decoration accented with hand-applied gilt. Modest in scale but deliberate in design, this set reflects the postwar moment when traditional European aesthetics were reinterpreted for the American home.

Design & Construction

Both pieces are formed in a creamy ivory porcelain with gently molded feet and curved silhouettes that reference earlier continental forms. The floral motif is transfer-applied, featuring muted golden-yellow blossoms and deep brown foliage, then finished with hand-painted gold detailing along the rims, handles, and feet.

The creamer features a pronounced pouring spout and balanced handle, while the sugar bowl is symmetrically handled, intended for open display rather than lidded storage. The lightness of the porcelain and precision of the molding point to mid-century export production rather than earlier European manufacture.

History & Provenance

Produced during the mid-20th century, this set is representative of Japanese export porcelain made for the American decorative market following World War II. During this period, Japanese manufacturers supplied the U.S. with high-quality, European-inspired tableware and decorative objects that balanced tradition with affordability.

The remaining foil paper label on the base, though worn, is consistent with export and retailer marks used during this era and supports a mid-century date.

Condition

Very good vintage condition.
→ No visible cracks or repairs
→ Light wear to gilt consistent with age
→ Minor surface wear to underside labels, expected and unaltered

Overall presentation remains clean, stable, and display-ready.

It is the kind of object that signals taste without explanation—noticed only by those who pay attention.
