Pair of Antique Forged Iron Candle Wall Sconces, Gothic Revival / Arts & Crafts, c. 1890–1920

The Piece

Pair of Forged Iron Candle Wall Sconces, c. 1890–1920

A matched pair of hand-forged iron wall-mounted candle sconces dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Executed in a restrained Gothic Revival idiom with early Arts & Crafts influence, each sconce features vertically oriented scrollwork formed from solid iron bar stock and anchored by a simple rectangular wall plate.

The interlaced curves display subtle asymmetry and hammer marks consistent with hand-forged construction, lending each piece quiet individuality while maintaining a cohesive mirrored form as a pair. Each sconce terminates in a shallow circular drip plate designed to hold a single taper candle.

The iron retains an aged blackened patina, with no evidence of later electrification or structural modification, preserving the original function and intent.

Why It Belongs in Your Home

This pair is about balance, texture, and atmosphere.

Installed symmetrically along a hallway, flanking a fireplace, framing a doorway, or anchoring a stairwell, these sconces introduce warmth without ornament excess. Their forged iron construction provides contrast against plaster, stone, wood, or painted walls, working equally well in historic interiors and contemporary spaces that benefit from architectural depth.

They are functional objects, but their true value lies in the way they shape light and shadow.
