The Piece
Richly decorated and unmistakably European, this elegant porcelain table lamp was crafted by Porzellan-Manufaktur Plaue in Thuringia, Germany. Finished in a striking oxblood marbled glaze with gilt accents, the baluster-form body is centered by an oval hand-applied transfer depicting an intimate Rococo court scene framed by raised gilt beading.
Originally produced as a decorative porcelain vessel before being professionally mounted as a table lamp, the piece embodies the post-war European tradition of transforming fine porcelain into sophisticated lighting for formal interiors.
When illuminated, the deep crimson glaze develops remarkable depth while the porcelain subtly transmits warmth, highlighting the intricate decoration.
History
Founded in 1817, Porzellan-Manufaktur Plaue became one of Germany's respected porcelain manufacturers, producing decorative art porcelain inspired by European courtly themes and historic Meissen traditions. During the mid-twentieth century, many of the firm's decorative vases and urns were exported internationally and converted into luxury table lamps, particularly for American interiors.
The romantic figural medallion references 18th-century French salon life, while the dramatic crimson glaze reflects the continued popularity of traditional European decorative arts during the 1940s and 1950s.
Condition & Provenance
The porcelain body retains its original Porzellan-Manufaktur Plaue factory label.
The lamp presents in very good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The porcelain displays minor surface wear and light rubbing to portions of the gilt decoration consistent with decades of careful use. The wood base, wiring, socket, and harp are later components and function as intended.
The shade shown is for display purposes and may be included only if desired.
