Product Overview
The Piece
A classic English blue transferware bread plate by Palissy, produced as part of the “1790 Avon Scenes” pattern under Royal Worcester. The plate features a finely detailed pastoral river scene, with a boatman in the foreground, country architecture in the distance, and a richly patterned floral border in deep blue against a warm cream ground.
Sized as a bread or side plate, this piece brings the collected charm of traditional English tableware without overwhelming a place setting. It works beautifully layered with ironstone, antique silver, linen napkins, farmhouse ceramics, or mixed blue-and-white china.
History
Palissy Pottery became known for printed earthenware tableware in the English tradition, often drawing from historic scenic and floral transferware patterns. After Palissy became part of the Royal Worcester group in the late 1950s, pieces were marked with variations noting Royal Worcester association, including subsidiary marks like the one seen here.
The “1790 Avon Scenes” pattern references the romantic English countryside through a blue transfer-printed landscape, echoing the visual language of early Staffordshire-style scenic wares. While the “1790” name suggests historic inspiration, this specific piece dates to the mid-to-late 20th century, most likely c. 1958–1970s, based on the Royal Worcester subsidiary backstamp.

Why It Belongs In Your Home
This plate has the kind of timeless utility that makes vintage tableware actually worth owning, which is nice, since not everything old deserves a second act. The blue-and-white palette feels refined but relaxed, making it easy to mix into a collected table setting, hang as part of a plate wall, or use as a charming bread, dessert, or small serving plate.
Its scenic design gives it more presence than a plain side plate, while the smaller scale makes it especially versatile. Styled on open shelving, layered beneath a teacup, paired with linen and silver, or used for a single perfect slice of cake, it carries that English country-house feeling without requiring anyone to inherit a drafty manor.
