The Piece
A pair of vintage Taylor Ironstone Currier & Ives plates by Taylor, Smith & Taylor, made in the U.S.A. and designed in a classic blue-and-ivory transferware style. Each plate features a detailed rural homestead scene, complete with farmhouse, trees, wagon, fenced landscape, and pastoral countryside detailing.
The decorative blue border gives the pair a tailored Americana look, while the ironstone body adds the weight and practicality associated with mid-century American dinnerware. They are sturdy, nostalgic, and charming without being overly precious, which is more than can be said for most “farmhouse” decor made after 2015.
History
Taylor, Smith & Taylor was part of America’s strong domestic pottery tradition, producing durable household ceramics for everyday use throughout the 20th century. The Taylor Ironstone line reflected the mid-century demand for dishes that were attractive enough for the table but durable enough for regular family meals.
This Currier & Ives pattern draws inspiration from the famous 19th-century American printmakers known for romanticized scenes of rural life, homes, winter landscapes, horses, and early American domestic imagery. By the late 1950s, this kind of colonial revival and nostalgic Americana styling was especially popular in American homes. Families wanted dishware that felt traditional, wholesome, and rooted in heritage, because apparently even dinner needed a backstory.
The backstamp notes “oven proof” and “detergent safe,” placing the plates firmly in the practical mid-century era when manufacturers promoted convenience, durability, and modern household compatibility.

Why It Belongs In Your Home
This pair has the kind of late-1950s American charm that works beautifully in a cottage kitchen, farmhouse dining room, blue-and-white plate wall, or layered vintage tablescape. The scene is detailed and nostalgic, while the blue border gives the plates just enough structure to feel decorative rather than overly sentimental.
They are especially good for collectors of blue transferware, American ironstone, Currier & Ives dinnerware, or mid-century Americana. Display them on a shelf, hang them as a pair, or use them as accent plates for serving small bites, desserts, or breakfast. Civilization may be crumbling, but at least the toast can sit on something charming.
