Vintage Capodimonte Porcelain Vase with Applied Roses — Naples, Italy (c. 1940–1955)
The Piece
A beautifully formed mid-century Capodimonte porcelain vase, produced in Naples, Italy and marked with the traditional crown over “N” Capodimonte mark with “Made in Italy.”
This elegant trumpet-form vase features hand-applied porcelain roses and leaves, delicately modeled and fired separately before being attached to the vessel body. The piece transitions from a soft blush-pink base to an ivory neck, a glaze treatment typical of post-war Capodimonte decorative porcelain exported to the United States.
The composition balances sculptural ornament with restrained elegance. The rose cluster wraps naturally around the lower body of the vase, while the tall flared neck gives the form height and visual presence. The subtle glaze crazing throughout the surface adds depth and confirms age, giving the porcelain a soft antique character that modern reproductions rarely achieve.
About Capodimonte Porcelain
Capodimonte porcelain traces its origins to the Royal Capodimonte factory founded in Naples in 1730 by King Charles of Bourbon. The factory became known for refined porcelain sculpture, elaborate floral modeling, and finely executed decorative wares.
After World War II, the Capodimonte tradition was revived by Neapolitan workshops producing decorative porcelain for international export. Many of these pieces carried the crown over “N” mark, referencing the historic royal manufactory.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Capodimonte studios produced a wide range of floral porcelain objects for the American market. Vases such as this example reflect the period’s emphasis on sculptural floral ornament, delicate glazing, and romantic decorative motifs.
Historical Context
Post-war Italian decorative arts experienced a resurgence in international demand, particularly in the United States. Italian ceramics, glass, and porcelain became sought-after decorative imports during the late 1940s and 1950s.
Capodimonte pieces featuring applied porcelain roses and pastel glazing were especially popular as giftware and home décor, combining the long heritage of Neapolitan porcelain craftsmanship with mid-century decorative tastes.
Examples from this period remain collectible today for their hand-applied sculptural elements and traditional Capodimonte aesthetic.
