The Piece
A charming set of pie-wedge serving dishes in creamy white pottery, each one a quarter segment with a gently dished well and a boldly scalloped outer rim modeled with a run of raised teardrop bosses. Set side by side they lock together into a complete circle — a sectioned relish tray, meant to sit on a lazy susan or a footed stand at the center of a table.
The glaze is a soft gloss white, warm rather than clinical, pooling faintly in the scallops so the rim reads as sculptural even from across a room. The undersides are cleanly finished and impressed CALIF USA L-48.
History & Provenance
California was the center of American ceramics for four decades. Cheap clay, cheap fuel, year-round kilns, and the postwar building boom made Southern California the country's pottery capital between roughly 1930 and 1970, and the state's potteries turned out dinnerware, art pottery, and serving ware in staggering volume.
The sectioned relish set belongs squarely to that moment. Midcentury entertaining ran on the buffet and the cocktail hour, and the divided server — olives here, pickles there, nuts and cheese in the last two — was the piece that made a spread look composed instead of scattered. Sets like this were produced in enormous numbers, mounted on wooden or brass lazy susans and given as wedding and housewarming gifts across the country.
The CALIF USA stamp with a letter-and-number shape code is the signature of that trade. Many California potteries marked their ware with origin and mold number alone, leaving the firm's name off because the pieces sold through wholesalers rather than under a brand. The L-48 here is that mold code, placing this set within a numbered production series even without a named maker.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
A sectioned server is one of those pieces that quietly makes entertaining easier. Ring them around a lazy susan or a cake stand for olives, cornichons, nuts, and cheese; use them separately as small salad or dessert plates; or fill two with dip and set them at either end of a board. They stack neatly, so they store in the space of a single dish.
White is what makes them useful. Against a wood board, a linen runner, or a dark table they read as crisp and considered, and they let the food supply all the color. They also group beautifully with other white pottery on an open shelf — the scalloped rim gives a plain white stack real texture, and this is the kind of set that looks far better out than put away.
