Product Overview
The Piece
Vintage 1979 NASDS Safe Scuba Diving Tables calculator card.
Printed laminated/plastic dive-planning tool with rotating blue surface interval wheel.
Marked National Association of Scuba Diving Schools with copyright 1979 NASDS.
This late-1970s scuba diving table card was made for recreational dive planning before wrist-mounted dive computers became standard. One side features a rotating blue calculator wheel marked for Actual Time and Surface Interval, while the reverse includes brightly colored repetitive dive tables for calculating depth, bottom time, residual nitrogen time, and surface intervals.
The piece has strong technical graphic appeal: red NASDS branding, blue circular calculator wheel, black-and-white table grids, and color-coded dive tables in yellow, green, orange, and red. It is best treated as a collectible dive-training object, nautical display piece, or vintage sport ephemera, not as current-use safety equipment. Because yes, using a 1979 plastic card for modern dive safety would be a bold little lawsuit invitation.
Condition + Updates
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear. The graphics remain readable, including the NASDS logo, table instructions, color-coded repetitive dive tables, and rotating surface interval wheel.
The front shows light scratches, scuffing, and handling marks. The reverse side includes a small dark punched mark or hole through one section of the table area. Corners and edges show light wear consistent with use. The calculator wheel appears present and visually intact.
This piece is sold as a vintage collectible and display object only, not as current-use scuba safety equipment. Modern divers should rely on current certification standards, current tables, dive computers, and proper training, because surviving the ocean should ideally involve tools from this century.
Historical Context
Before dive computers became common, recreational divers used printed dive tables to plan bottom time, surface intervals, and repetitive dives. These tables helped divers estimate nitrogen absorption and avoid exceeding recommended no-decompression limits.
The NASDS, or National Association of Scuba Diving Schools, was one of the major recreational scuba training organizations of the 20th century. This 1979 card reflects the analog era of dive planning, when divers carried physical tables and manually calculated dive profiles between dives.
Its appeal today is both technical and nostalgic: compact, colorful, dated, and deeply specific to the golden age of recreational scuba training.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
This piece belongs in a dive shop, bar cart vignette, nautical shelf, vintage sport collection, cabin, coastal home, or framed curiosity wall. The colors and technical graphics give it more visual interest than most flat ephemera, while the rotating wheel adds a tactile mechanical element.
It pairs well with vintage scuba gear, nautical charts, brass objects, old compasses, maritime books, cameras, travel ephemera, and other analog tools from the pre-digital age. Small, technical, colorful, and oddly charming. Naturally, it was built to prevent underwater chaos and now looks good on a shelf. Evolution, allegedly.
