Product Overview
The Piece
A lovely antique Alfred Meakin Medway Decor Royal Semi-Porcelain bowl, made in England and decorated in a soft blue floral transfer pattern. The bowl features a creamy white ground with cobalt-blue floral sprays around the exterior and interior rim, finished with a decorative blue border band near the lower body.
The underside bears a blue printed crown-style backstamp reading Medway Decor, Alfred Meakin, England. Now that the pattern name is readable, this can confidently be listed as Medway Decor, not just generic blue floral transferware. See, civilization limps forward.
Design & Construction
This bowl is made from Royal Semi-Porcelain, a durable ceramic body commonly used by English potteries for tableware during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rounded form, slightly flared rim, glossy glaze, and blue floral transfer decoration give it the classic Staffordshire tableware look collectors love.
The Medway Decor pattern uses blue floral sprays and border detailing, making the piece easy to mix with ironstone, blue-and-white transferware, Delft-inspired ceramics, and cottage kitchen collections.
Based on the visible Alfred Meakin backstamp with “England” and the Royal Semi-Porcelain marking, this piece is best dated to circa 1897–1930. Alfred Meakin marks with “England” appear after 1891, and “Ltd.” was added after 1897, with some mark variations changing again around 1930. (The Potteries)
History & Provenance
Alfred Meakin was one of the major Staffordshire pottery manufacturers, producing semi-porcelain, ironstone, transferware, dinnerware, and serving pieces for domestic and export markets. The company operated from Tunstall, Staffordshire, and became especially known for practical but decorative English tableware.
Medway Decor fits within this broader tradition of blue-and-white English transferware: useful enough for everyday service, decorative enough for open shelving, and sturdy enough to survive a century of cupboards, moves, and human nonsense.
Condition
Antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The glaze appears glossy with light surface wear from use. No major cracks or large chips are visible from the provided photos, though the rim and foot should be inspected closely before final listing. Backstamp is present but slightly blurred in the image. Minor manufacturing marks, glaze variation, and age-related surface wear may be present.
