Product Overview
The Piece
Antique Royal Doulton Exeter pattern plates.
Made in England, with Royal Doulton backstamp and registered design number Rd No. 626468.
Cream earthenware body with deep blue scale border, pink rose garland, black vine swags, and brown rim line.
These antique English plates feature Royal Doulton’s Exeter pattern, a refined early-20th-century design with a cream ground, blue scalloped border, and delicate rose-and-vine garland around the well. The border combines deep cobalt-blue scale work with white accents and a brown outer rim, giving the plates a layered English tableware look without being fussy enough to require a footman. Tragic for the footman, useful for us.
The reverse is marked Royal Doulton / England / Exeter / Rd No. 626468, placing the design in the early 20th century. The plates show extensive glaze crazing throughout, which is visible on both the front and underside and should be treated as part of the antique condition.
Condition + Updates
Antique condition with extensive visible crazing throughout the glaze. The crazing appears across the fronts and backs of the plates, with areas of discoloration, staining, and age-related darkening visible within the glaze lines and underside surfaces.
The printed decoration remains readable and attractive, including the blue border, rose garland, vine swags, and Royal Doulton backstamp. No obvious large breaks are visible in the provided photos, but rims should be checked closely for chips, flea bites, hairlines, or repairs before final listing. These are best positioned as decorative antique plates or light-use tableware rather than everyday dining pieces, because century-old crazed earthenware deserves gentler treatment than a microwave burrito, apparently.
Historical Context
Royal Doulton was one of England’s most recognized ceramic manufacturers, producing tableware, art pottery, and decorative ceramics through the 19th and 20th centuries. The Exeter pattern reflects early-20th-century English tableware design, combining floral garland decoration with a strong geometric blue border.
The registered design number 626468 places the design in the early 1900s, with production likely continuing afterward. This makes a c. 1910s–1920s listing date appropriate for the plates unless more precise catalog documentation is found.
Why This Belongs in Your Home
These plates bring an English country layer to a shelf, hutch, wall display, dining room, or collected table setting. The blue border gives structure, while the pink rose garland softens the design enough to work with both formal antique china and more relaxed cottage-style interiors.
They pair well with ironstone, transferware, silverplate, linen, old glass, brass candlesticks, florals, and dark wood. Used decoratively, they have the kind of quiet antique presence that makes a room feel collected instead of assembled during a panic scroll through retail websites.
