A rugged vintage Embury No. 2 Air Pilot kerosene lantern, dating to c. 1939–1953, with heavy age, oxidation, and the unmistakable form of a working American hurricane lantern. Made by Embury Mfg. Co. of Warsaw, New York, this lantern carries embossed maker and model markings on the tank, including “Embury No. 2 Air Pilot.”

The lantern features a classic cold-blast style body with a wire bail handle, side supports, burner assembly, globe guard, vented chimney, and round fuel tank base. Its surface is deeply weathered, with rust, patina, paint loss, and oxidized metal throughout, giving it the kind of honest industrial character that only time and actual use can create.

The glass globe is missing, and the lantern has not been tested for function. It is being sold as a decorative vintage lantern, ideal for display, restoration, rustic styling, cabin decor, farmhouse interiors, or an antique lighting collection.

History

The Embury No. 2 Air Pilot was introduced in the late 1930s and produced into the early 1950s by Embury Mfg. Co. of Warsaw, New York. The Air Pilot line became one of Embury’s recognized utility lantern models, made during an era when kerosene lanterns remained essential for farms, workshops, railroad-adjacent utility use, camps, barns, garages, and household emergency lighting.

This lantern’s embossed tank marking identifies it as an Embury No. 2 Air Pilot, with the manufacturer’s name visible on the base. The model is generally associated with the period before Embury’s acquisition by Dietz in the early 1950s, making c. 1939–1953 the safest date range.

The lantern survives with strong surface age and wear, including rust, oxidation, and finish loss throughout. While it may be restorable, it is best listed conservatively as an untested vintage display piece.
