Product Overview

The Piece

English Art Deco handled fruit bowl by H&K Tunstall, c. 1930s.
Earthenware body with scalloped rim, molded side handles, yellow exterior wash, cobalt blue borderwork, and hand-painted fruit decoration.
Marked “Tutum,” “Made in England,” and “H&K Tunstall” on the underside.

This vintage English bowl has a shaped Art Deco profile with soft angular edges, shallow basin form, and integrated side handles. The interior is decorated with hand-painted fruit and foliage, including grapes, citrus-toned fruit, and green leaves, set against expressive brushwork in cobalt blue, tan, brown, cream, and muted rose.

The exterior carries a warm yellow glaze wash, giving the piece a strong color presence from both front and back. The black rim outline, molded handle detail, and painterly decoration place it firmly within early 20th-century English decorative pottery, with a handmade quality that feels collected rather than overly formal. A useful little reminder that bowls did, at one point, have more personality than most modern apartments.

About H&K Tunstall

H&K Tunstall refers to Hollinshead & Kirkham, a Staffordshire pottery manufacturer based in Tunstall, England. Tunstall was one of the historic pottery towns associated with Stoke-on-Trent, a major center of English ceramic production.

During the early 20th century, English potteries produced a wide range of decorative earthenware pieces with bold color, molded forms, hand-finished details, and Art Deco influence. This bowl reflects that period through its shaped silhouette, saturated color palette, and hand-painted fruit motif.

Historical Context

This bowl belongs to the English Art Deco pottery tradition of the 1930s, when Staffordshire makers produced expressive decorative wares for everyday homes. Unlike formal porcelain, these pieces often emphasized color, shape, and hand-painted surface treatment.

The fruit motif was especially popular in domestic pottery of the period, connecting the piece to kitchens, dining rooms, sideboards, breakfast tables, and informal entertaining. The scalloped form and painterly decoration give it a balance of function and ornament, while the H&K Tunstall mark anchors it to a known English pottery manufacturer.

Condition + Updates

This piece is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The glaze remains glossy, and the hand-painted fruit decoration is clear and visually strong. The underside shows light age marks, minor surface speckling, and small glaze imperfections consistent with vintage ceramic production.

There are small signs of use and wear to the rim and high points. No major chips or cracks are visible from the photos. The underside includes a small raised glaze imperfection near the foot ring and minor blue pigment marks.

The piece has not been restored. Its original glaze, painted decoration, and maker’s mark remain intact.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This bowl brings color, movement, and English Art Deco character into a room without feeling overly precious. The cobalt blue and yellow palette makes it visually strong, while the hand-painted fruit motif keeps it warm and approachable.

Use it on a kitchen shelf, dining table, bar cart, vanity, bookshelf, or console. It works beautifully as a small fruit bowl, jewelry dish, wrapped-candy bowl, or layered tabletop accent. Its appeal is in the combination of maker, period, color, and form: a decorative piece with history, not a generic bowl wearing a fruit costume.
