Product Overview

The Piece

A vintage Thread-a-Matic Model 72 needle threader, c. 1950s.
Made by Nelpin Mfg. Co., Inc. of New York, N.Y., with cream molded plastic body, red translucent accents, and metal threading mechanism.
Marked “Thread-a-Matic,” “Model 72,” “Made in U.S.A.,” and patent numbers 2,490,882 and 2,490,885 on the underside.

This mid-century sewing tool was designed to assist with threading needles and cutting thread, using a small mechanical lever and plunger system built into a compact tabletop form. The cream plastic body and red translucent details give the piece a distinctly 1950s domestic look, back when even a needle threader apparently needed glamour, mechanical ambition, and a name worthy of a kitchen appliance.

The form includes molded needle guides, upright supports, red push-button components, and a metal lever/blade assembly. It is both a functional sewing aid and a charming collectible object from the era of home sewing, mending, tailoring, and household repair.

Condition + Updates

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The cream molded plastic body presents well with visible surface scratches, scuffs, and light discoloration from use. The red translucent plastic elements are present and visually strong. The metal lever and threading mechanism remain in place with light wear and patina. The underside maker, model, patent, and origin markings are legible. A small area of residue or surface loss is visible near the mechanism.

The piece retains its original form and strong display appeal as a mid-century sewing collectible.

Why This Belongs in Your Home

This Thread-a-Matic brings the charm of 1950s domestic design into a sewing room, studio, bookshelf, vanity, or collected tabletop display. It is the kind of object that tells a story about home sewing, repair culture, and clever household tools before every task was outsourced to plastic junk with an app.

The cream-and-red colorway makes it especially decorative, while the marked underside gives it stronger collector interest. It styles beautifully with vintage scissors, thread spools, sewing baskets, dress forms, pattern books, textiles, or other mid-century household tools. Small, useful, and visually memorable, because once in a while a tiny gadget actually earns its space.
