The smallest parts of a piece often tell the biggest truths. A single screw, nail, or hinge can place a piece of furniture in its century — or expose a “200-year-old” chest as a much later work. Because metal fittings changed in step with industry, learning to read them is one of the most powerful dating tools a collector has.

Nails: Wrought, Cut, and Wire
Nails fall into three great eras, and telling them apart is the fastest hardware date of all.
Hand-Wrought Nails (before c. 1800)
Forged one at a time by a blacksmith, wrought nails taper on all four sides to a point and have irregular, hammer-faceted “rose” heads, each slightly different. They are the rule on furniture made before roughly 1800.
Cut Nails (c. 1790s–1890s)
Machine-sheared from rolled iron plate “like a cookie cutter,” cut nails have a rectangular shank that tapers on only two sides. Early examples (c. 1790–1830) still had separately formed heads; later machines headed them in one operation. Cut nails were the standard through most of the 19th century.
Wire Nails (c. 1890s onward)
The modern round nail, drawn from steel wire with a uniform shank and a machine-made point, came to dominate American production only around the 1890s. Round wire nails in a piece said to be early are a clear sign of later work or repair.
Screws: The Point Is the Point
Screws are a superb dating clue because their manufacture improved in clear stages.
Hand-Made Screws (before c. 1840s)
Early screws show irregular, uneven threads, a blunt (flat) tip that needed a pre-drilled hole, an off-center or hand-filed slot, and file marks running in several directions. If a screw looks slightly crude and has no sharp point, it is likely early.
Machine Screws With a Point (after c. 1846–1850s)
By the mid-19th century, machines produced screws with consistent threads and a sharp, self-starting gimlet point, and a neatly centered slot. A perfectly regular, pointed slotted screw points to the second half of the 19th century or later. (These milestones are the commonly cited dates; treat them as approximate.)
Phillips-Head Screws (1930s onward)
The cross-recess Phillips screw was patented in 1932 and reached production lines in the mid-1930s. A Phillips screw anywhere in a supposedly antique piece is a dead giveaway of 20th-century work or repair.

Hinges
Early furniture used hand-forged iron — strap, H, HL, and cotter-pin “snipe” hinges — irregular and hammer-marked. The cast-iron butt hinge, patented in England in 1775, spread quickly and became standard on 19th-century furniture; uniform, tightly machined hinges are later still.
Pulls and Brasses by Era
Handles changed with fashion and are a useful cross-check with the style of the whole piece:
- Teardrop (pear-drop) pulls on cotter pins — William and Mary, late 17th century
- Bail handles on solid cast back plates — Queen Anne and Georgian, 18th century
- Pierced, openwork rococo brasses — Chippendale, mid-18th century
- Thin stamped oval and round brasses with rosettes, urns, or eagles — Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and Federal, late 18th century
- Turned wooden knobs and heavy cast pulls — Victorian, 19th century
The arrival of thin stamped brass in the 1780s is itself a dating marker: solid cast plates are earlier, stamped sheet plates later.
Ghost Marks: Reading Replaced Hardware
Because handles were changed so often, the drawer front itself keeps a record. Look for:
- Filled or extra holes sized for a different, earlier plate or bail spacing
- Shadow or “ghost” outlines where an earlier back plate protected the finish, leaving an unfaded silhouette
- Bruises in the wood where an old bail dropped, or a ring of different patina around the current pull
A ghost of a different pull shape usually means the current brasses are later replacements. That is not automatically bad — hardware is legitimately swapped over a long life — but it must be weighed against the pull style and the nails and screws around it, and it can also help expose a reproduction or a married piece.
Use Hardware as One Clue Among Several
Hardware dates the metal, not always the whole piece — so treat it as one line of evidence. A few working rules:
- Wrought nails, hand-made blunt screws, and forged hinges suggest pre-1800 work
- Cut nails and pointed machine screws suggest the 19th century
- Wire nails or Phillips screws mean later work or repair, wherever they appear
- Hardware is often legitimately replaced — confirm with dovetails, saw marks, and wear
- The pull style should agree with the piece’s overall style and date
- Ghost marks reveal earlier, different hardware — read them carefully
