Around 1740 in Sheffield, Benjamin Huntsman developed a process that, as Encyclopædia Britannica puts it, produced steel “more uniform in composition and freer from impurities than any steel previously produced.” Fully melting the steel gave it a homogeneous crystal structure — which raised its hardness and strength — while fluxes let impurities float off. The result was famous, as the record of crucible steel notes, for its ability to hold an edge. “Cast steel” is simply the old trade name for it; the phrase does not mean the blade was cast to shape.

High-Carbon vs. Modern Alloy Steel: A Fair Trade-off

Most antique edge tools are plain high-carbon steel. Most premium modern tools use alloy steels (A2, and powder-metal steels such as PM-V11). Neither is simply “better” — they trade different strengths:

  • High-carbon steel takes a slightly keener edge and is easier to sharpen, because its very simple grain structure can be honed to an exceptionally fine edge — but it dulls faster and needs more frequent honing.
