The Piece
A delicate early 20th-century enamelware vanity jar, dating to the 1920s–1930s, featuring a softly domed lid topped with a cast metal finial and secured by its original retaining chain. The body is finished in a warm cream enamel and decorated with understated floral motifs in blush pink and muted green.
Designed for a dressing table rather than a kitchen, this piece reflects a time when personal rituals were slow, tactile, and beautifully considered.
Design & Construction
→ Enameled metal body with smooth, luminous finish
→ Applied floral transfer decoration
→ Domed metal lid with sculpted finial
→ Original retaining chain to prevent lid loss
→ Compact, elegant vanity scale
The palette is intentionally soft — meant to harmonize with lace, porcelain, and polished wood.
Historical Context
In the 1920s and early 1930s, vanity culture flourished. Powder jars like this were staples on dressing tables, holding face powder or cream and often given as gifts. The inclusion of a retaining chain speaks to both practicality and refinement — an element that disappears as manufacturing modernizes.
This piece belongs squarely in that intimate domestic world.
Condition
Good antique condition, consistent with age.
→ Light surface wear and fine scratches to enamel
→ Minor wear to floral decoration, appropriate and even
→ Chain intact and functional
→ Lid seats properly
No structural damage observed.
