The Piece

This antique oval wall mirror dates to the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, retaining its original mirror plate, brass-toned metal frame, and early backing hardware. The glass exhibits natural foxing, edge silver loss, and subtle clouding consistent with age, resulting in a softened, atmospheric reflection that cannot be replicated by modern glass.

The oval form is framed by a pressed brass surround with restrained decorative cresting at the crown, a detail commonly found in domestic mirrors produced around the turn of the 20th century. These mirrors were intended for intimate interior spaces—bedrooms, dressing rooms, and hallways—where reflection was secondary to function and presence.

The mirror’s surface responds dynamically to light, shifting between clarity and opacity depending on angle and environment. This quality, combined with the intact original materials, gives the piece depth and character while preserving its historical integrity.
