Product Overview

The Piece

A vintage A1 Sports ladies’ right-hand tennis glove, dating to approximately c. late 1960s–early 1970s, preserved in its original orange retail packaging. The glove is marked “Tennis Glove” with printed details noting a deluxe finger, leather palm, Helenca stretch back, and one size fits all construction.

The glove itself is white with a stitched tennis racket and ball motif at the wrist tab. The original packaging gives the piece strong visual appeal, with bold black typography, a simple racket illustration, and that unmistakable late mid-century sporting-goods look. Apparently even tennis gloves once had better graphic design than most modern wellness brands. Tragic, but useful for us.

Included with the glove is a worn Official Tennis Rules Summarized booklet, courtesy of Victor Sports Strings, with interior advertising for Davis tennis frames and “The Classic” Clasiden laminated racket.

Historical Context

This set captures the tennis boom of the late 1960s and early 1970s, when recreational tennis, club play, and sporting accessories became increasingly popular across American leisure culture. Tennis was not just a sport; it was a full aesthetic: white clothing, wood rackets, club courts, printed rule booklets, branded strings, and accessories like gloves designed to improve grip and protect the hand.

The glove’s material callouts, including leather palm and Helenca stretch back, point to mid-century textile innovation and comfort-focused athletic accessories. The packaging style and included Victor Sports booklet place the set most comfortably around c. 1970.

The rules booklet adds excellent period context. Its Davis racket advertising references laminated wood-frame tennis technology, connecting the piece to the era just before graphite and composite rackets fully changed the game.

Condition

This set is in vintage condition. The glove appears preserved in its original plastic packaging, though the packaging shows wrinkling, handling wear, and age-related discoloration. The orange header card has visible price writing, a punch hole, and staple wear.

The Official Tennis Rules Summarized booklet shows significant wear, including creasing, staining, edge loss, paper thinning, surface marks, and writing on the cover. It should be considered an accompanying piece of sports ephemera rather than a pristine booklet.

The glove has not been tested for wear or play. It is best suited for display, collecting, or styling rather than athletic use.

Why It Belongs In Your Home

This is a strong small collectible for anyone drawn to vintage tennis, country club culture, old sporting goods, or mid-century athletic packaging. The orange A1 Sports header card gives it immediate shelf presence, while the rules booklet adds context and period charm.

Style it with vintage rackets, old trophies, leather-bound books, framed sports prints, or in a study, clubhouse display, mudroom, or retail vignette. It brings that old racquet-club feeling without requiring anyone to sprint across a court in white shorts, a mercy civilization rarely provides.
