Product Overview
The Piece
A full-scale early 20th century earthenware dinner plate featuring a soft ivory field framed by a seafoam-to-teal gradient rim.
The molded border carries subtle raised detailing beneath the glaze, creating texture and shadow around the perimeter. The glaze deepens at the outer edge and fades inward, producing a watery tonal shift that feels atmospheric and period-correct.
The surface exhibits consistent, authentic crazing across the face and underside — a natural result of age and kiln-fired earthenware. The underside is fully glazed with a clean circular foot and no maker’s mark.
Understated. Textural. Quietly elegant.
Historical Context
Between 1900 and 1915, American and English potteries embraced softer glaze palettes influenced by late Victorian naturalism and the emerging Arts & Crafts movement.
Seafoam greens, celadon-inspired tones, and subtle gradient rims became popular alternatives to heavily patterned Victorian transferware. These wares were designed to bring refinement and gentle color into everyday dining.
While many factories marked their ceramics, large production lines — especially decorative export and domestic tableware — were frequently left unmarked.
The pronounced but stable glaze crazing seen here is consistent with early 20th century earthenware bodies and period firing techniques.

Why It Belongs in Your Home
Dinner plate scale makes this versatile.
It works beautifully:
-
Layered into a plate wall
-
Propped on open shelving
-
Stacked with ironstone for contrast
-
Used as a shallow serving piece in a historic-inspired kitchen
-
Leaned in a modern neutral interior to add texture
The glaze has depth. The crazing catches light. The rim color softens a space without overpowering it.
It adds age without heaviness. Character without clutter.
That balance is harder to find than people think.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
Even, stable surface crazing throughout consistent with age. Minor glaze irregularities and light edge wear typical of early 20th century production. No visible structural cracks or significant losses.
Presents beautifully for display or gentle use.
