The Piece

The natural wooden tiles — worn honey-smooth from decades of small hands — sit in their original card slide-box, printed with a bold blackletter "DOMINO" inside a checkered domino-motif border. The real story is in the marks: the inner tray is stamped in a circle VOLKSSCHULE — a German state elementary school — with a class-and-inventory designation (VII / 1), and the lid still wears its original red German retailer's sticker. This was a classroom's game, catalogued and kept, and it survives complete with box, tiles, and its history intact.

History & Provenance

Dominoes have taught counting and strategy to children for generations, and this set did exactly that in a German Volksschule — the state primary school that educated German children until the term was retired in the 1960s school reforms. That timing, together with the classic German games-box graphics and the all-wood tiles, dates the set to roughly the 1930s through 1950s.
