The Piece
Ink Horse Tea Bowl, Chinese Porcelain, Hand-Painted Literati Style, c. mid–20th century
This hand-painted porcelain tea bowl was produced in China during the mid-20th century, drawing directly from the long-standing literati (wenren) tradition, where painting, calligraphy, and object are treated as a unified expression rather than separate disciplines.
Painted in expressive black ink, a horse in motion circles the exterior of the bowl, rendered with confident, economical brushwork. The image is accompanied by vertical calligraphy and a red seal mark, completing the composition in the classical balance of image, text, and mark. The result is restrained but animated—an object that privileges gesture and spirit over decorative excess.
Design & Construction
Crafted from thinly potted porcelain, the bowl features a smooth, luminous glaze that allows the ink painting to remain crisp and legible. The form is shallow and open, with a short, neatly finished foot ring that lifts the bowl lightly from the surface.
The proportions are intentional: wide enough to showcase the painted motif, yet modest in scale, aligning with traditional tea bowls designed for personal use rather than display alone.
History & Provenance
Horse imagery holds a powerful place in Chinese visual culture, symbolizing strength, endurance, vitality, and forward movement. Within literati art, horses are often depicted with minimal strokes, relying on suggestion rather than detail to convey energy and character.
Tea bowls decorated in this style were intended for quiet, contemplative use—objects meant to be handled, turned, and appreciated in moments of stillness. This bowl reflects that lineage, bridging functional tea ware and painterly expression.
While modest in appearance, pieces like this belong to a long continuum of scholar-influenced ceramics that value brushwork and meaning over ornament.
Condition
Very good vintage condition. No cracks or chips observed. Light surface wear consistent with age and use. Painted decoration remains clear and well preserved.
