The Piece

Three side plates from the roadside-café America of the 1930s: Jackson China's "Jac-Tan" — a warm tan vitrified body, dressed with a stenciled border in deep cranberry. The pattern is quietly Deco: crosshatched squares and swooping arcs repeating around the rim, applied by airbrush through a stencil at production speed, which gives the color its soft, powdery edges. Against the tan ground it reads like calico — sturdier than it is pretty, and prettier than it has any right to be.

Each plate carries the keystone backstamp — VITRIFIED JAC-TAN, JACKSON CHINA, MADE IN U.S.A. — the Pennsylvania mark of a pottery that fed the nation's lunch counters for most of a century.

History

The Jackson China Company of Falls Creek, Pennsylvania — deep in the state's clay-and-coal country, hence the keystone in the mark — was one of America's workhorse commercial potteries, supplying diners, hotels, railroads, and institutions from the 1910s onward. Jac-Tan was their signature twist on the form: where most restaurant ware was white, Jackson fired a tan body that hid coffee stains and knife marks, then trimmed it with stenciled and airbrushed borders in the Deco taste of the 1930s and '40s.

Tan-bodied ware with these stenciled borders belongs to the golden age of the American café — thick enough to survive the dish pit, styled enough to make a blue-plate special feel like an occasion. Jackson pressed on into the 1980s, but it is these prewar-pattern pieces that collectors of diner china seek out.
