The Piece

Nine rimmed soup bowls with generously scalloped edges, each one carrying three separate layers of decoration that were meant to be read in sequence as you work down toward the food.

The outer rim is banded in ochre and edged with a fine gilt beading. Inside that, a rococo border alternates green acanthus scrolls with panels of cross-hatched ochre, linked by delicate chains of dots so fine they read as pencil work. Then the decoration stops entirely, and the wide shoulder of the bowl is given over to moulded relief — daisies, ribbon, and swags pressed into the body in white-on-white, catching light rather than colour.

Only in the well does colour return, in a ring of loose polychrome sprays: forget-me-nots in two blues, small yellow flowerheads, a red accent, foliage in green and blue-green. The centre is left plain. It is a considered piece of design — ornament at the edge, texture in the middle, and colour where the eye lands last.

History & Provenance

Johnson Brothers was founded in 1883 by Alfred and Frederick Johnson at the Charles Street Works in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, in the heart of the Staffordshire Potteries. Their brothers Henry and Robert joined in 1888 and 1898. The family came to clay honestly: their father had married the daughter of the master potter James Meakin.

What made the firm was a material. The brothers began with a heavy durable earthenware called White Granite, then developed what they marketed as semi-porcelain — a body with the look of fine china and the toughness of ironstone. It was exactly what the American market wanted, and it sold in such volume that by 1898 Robert Johnson had moved to New York to run North American distribution. Three additional works opened in the space of two years to keep up.

These bowls come from the firm at its confident height, between the wars. The relief-moulded shoulder is the tell: pressing a pattern into the body before glazing costs a separate mould and slows the line, and factories reserved it for their better ranges. The rococo revival border, the fine dotted chainwork, and the scattered rather than symmetrical floral sprays are the vocabulary of English dinner services through the twenties and thirties, when tables were still formally set and a soup course was still expected.

Johnson Brothers went on to hold Royal Warrants from Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother and to win two Queen's Awards to Industry. The firm joined the Wedgwood Group in 1968, moved production to China in 2003, and was discontinued after Fiskars acquired Wedgwood in 2015. English-made Johnson Brothers of this period is no longer being replaced.

Why It Belongs in Your Home

Nine matching bowls is the number that matters. Sets of this age almost always arrive broken up — four here, six there, a service assembled from three estates — and a run of nine that came through together will seat eight with a spare for the one that eventually goes. That is a dinner party rather than a decorative accent.

Use them for what they were built for: soup, first, because a wide-rimmed bowl keeps a hot bowl liftable and gives the table a proper course. But they also take pasta, a grain salad, stewed fruit, or a scoop of ice cream, and the plain white centre means whatever you put in them looks intentional. Stacked on an open shelf, the moulded relief and shaped edges do enough work that they read as objects rather than crockery. A note on care: hand wash these. The gilt beading on the rim is the vulnerable part — a dishwasher will take it off within a season, and it cannot be put back. Avoid abrasive pads, and if you stack them, a paper towel or felt between each bowl will stop the rims wearing on one another the way they already have.
