An impressive late nineteenth-century Victorian Eastlake bedstead in richly toned walnut, with figured walnut and burl accents. The commanding headboard is crowned by an elaborate architectural crest of pierced geometric fretwork, circular medallions, scrolling carved forms and a dimensional floral centerpiece.
At the center of that crest is a hand-carved five-petal flower mounted against a vertically oriented panel of highly figured walnut. Paired scrolling forms rise above the floral element, with large circular medallions and layered curved ornament flanking either side. The pierced fretwork opens negative space through the upper crest, balancing the substantial scale of the bed. Below it, the headboard carries a large central turned medallion framed by elongated applied geometric panels, over a broad walnut field with visible grain variation and a warm, naturally aged surface.
The footboard mirrors the headboard in a lower profile, with a sweeping arched top rail, a central turned medallion, applied geometric ornament and broad walnut panels. The substantial scale, the layered carving and the contrast between straight-grained walnut and more dramatically figured sections give the bed a strong sculptural presence.
History & Provenance
The design reflects the Eastlake movement that became prominent in American furniture during the final quarter of the nineteenth century. Its characteristic elements are all present here: geometric ornament, incised carving, pierced construction, shallow relief, turned medallions and architectural symmetry.
Renaissance Revival influence can also be read in the scrolling upper crest and in the formal arrangement of the carved decorative elements.
The bed is unmarked and the maker is unidentified. Origin is likely American, and the dating of c. 1875 to 1890, with a working date of about 1880, rests on the idiom and the construction rather than on any label.
Provenance is a private collection, with no further history known.
