Mid-Century Lalique Crystal Bird Vide-Poche c.1950–1970

The Piece

Mid-Century Lalique Crystal Vide-Poche
Lalique, France
Pressed crystal with frosted bird finial
Acid-etched “Lalique France” signature to base
c. 1950–1970

Primary Description

A mid-century crystal vide-poche produced by Lalique, featuring a sculptural frosted bird perched at the center of a clear circular dish. The bird is rendered in Lalique’s signature satin-finished crystal, with softly defined plumage and a balanced, compact form.

The piece bears the acid-etched “Lalique France” mark, indicating post-war French production. Designed for daily use, the dish functions as a vide-poche or ring dish, intended for jewelry or small personal objects. The restrained scale and clarity of form reflect Lalique’s mid-century shift toward quiet domestic luxury rather than overt ornament.

Design & Construction

Pressed crystal construction with hand-finished detailing at the bird’s feet and base. Frosted and polished surfaces create contrast without excessive reflection. The shallow dish form provides stability while allowing the sculptural finial to remain the focal point.

History & Context

Lalique standardized the “Lalique France” signature after World War II as international demand for French crystal increased. During the 1950s–1970s, the house produced a range of small domestic objects intended for everyday use, often incorporating natural motifs such as birds and foliage. These pieces bridged functional design and sculptural form, aligning with mid-century tastes for refined but livable objects.

Condition

Very good vintage condition.
No chips or cracks observed. Light surface wear to the underside consistent with age and use.

Why It Belongs

This piece offers authentic Lalique craftsmanship in a restrained, usable form. It works equally well as a bedside jewelry dish, vanity accent, or subtle decorative object, bringing French crystal into daily life without excess.
